March 2009

A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA. 2004;292:1433-1439) in 2004 took a group of 70 to 90 year old people that were willing to change their diet and exercise. They were placed on a Mediterrean mature_runners(low glycemic index) diet and given appropriate exercise instructions. They concluded that among individuals aged 70 to 90 years, adherence to a Mediterranean diet and healthful lifestyle is associated with a more than 50% lower rate of death from all causes as compared to the control group. Why did this not make headlines? If the pharmaceutical companies found a drug that did that their stock prices would jump through the roof, even in today's rocky financial times.

Another study published in the journal Nutrition (Nutrition 2006;22(2):104-13, concluded that a significantly greater improvement was observed in cardiovascular risk factors in postmenopausal women on a low glycemic index diet with added soy protein and plant sterols (part of the FirstLine Therapy protocol) as compared to following the American Heart Association Step 1 diet alone.
