Cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, are our nation’s No. 1 killer. Join the American Heart Association in the battle against these diseases and celebrate September as National Cholesterol Eduation Month.
Are You At Risk? 50% of people at risk are not identified through routine testing. Advanced lipid testing can reveal additional risk factors that can not be identified with the traditional measurements of totla cholesterol, HDL, LDL and triglycerides.
Overview of Lipoprotein Particles and Cholesterol
Cholesterol testing has historically been used as the standard indicator for cardiovascular disease classified as HDL (good) or LDL (bad). However, it is actually the lipoprotein particles that carry the cholesterol throughout the body, not necessarily the cholesterol within them, that are responsible for key steps in plaque production and the resulting development of cardiovascular disease. Cardiovascular risk increases with a higher LDL particle count. Now there is an advanced test which actually measures the density and number of lipoprotein particles.
A Better Measure of Risk
Advanced lipid testing measures all the important lipoprotein particles (small dense LDL, RLP, Lp(a) and HDL2B) and the non-lipid risk factors as well. Measuring the number, size and density of lipoprotein particles and the non-lipid risk factors is the most important step in identifying your risk of heart disease. Measuring cholesterol alone does not provide the complete picture and can be misleading. Knowing the precise information about a person’s lipoproteins is the critical step in establishing an effective treatment program.
Features and Benefits: • Measures particle density & number • Superior technology
• Additional risk factor measurements
• Easy-to-understand reporting • Easy sample collection
• Cost effective
Who needs advanced lipid testing?
All patients, and especially those who:
• Have a family history of heart disease
• Have been diagnosed with heart disease or diabetes
• Are already taking cholesterol-lowering medications
• Have been diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome (high blood pressure) • Are overweight
• Have low HDL – the good cholesterol
• Have high LDL – the bad cholesterol • Have high triglycerides
