FOOD- THE MOST POWERFUL MEDICINE

The more years we are in practice, the more amazed we become aware of the power of food; not only for nourishment but also its ability to heal and restore health in profound ways. Miracle nutrients and supplements seem to come and go weekly. Yet as time and experience consistently demonstrates, food remains the constant that can affect us more powerfully than most interventions. Poor quality and unhealthy food is powerful as well as it can create poor health outcomes in so many different ways. When you include healthy and fresh whole food and a diet rich in fresh and organic vegetables and fruits as well as lean organic animal protein, abundant health seems to flourish.

Eliminating food allergies and sensitivities with a healthy diet along with sources of healthy gastrointestinal micro-organisms such as Lactobacillus and bifidobacterium species, provides a powerful foundation upon which all other needed interventions can work even better.

One great example is the growing awareness of celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Some sources show that when you include both these groups together up to 75% of the population is represented. Celiac disease occurs when the body reacts abnormally to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and possibly oats. When someone with celiac disease eats foods containing gluten, that person's immune system causes an inflammatory response in the small intestine, which damages the tissues and results in impaired ability to absorb nutrients from foods. The inflammation and malabsorption create wide-ranging problems in many systems of the body. Since the body's own immune system causes the damage, celiac disease is classified as an "autoimmune" disorder. Celiac disease may also be called sprue, nontropical sprue, gluten sensitive enteropathy, celiac sprue, and adult celiac disease.

Non-celiac gluten sensitivity (NCGS) means that a person would test negative on all the strict-criteria celiac blood tests and biopsy, but still could have mild to severe health problems caused by eating gluten.

The gold standard of food allergy detection is still an elimination diet for a period of time followed by reintroduction of individual foods, one at a time and observing for any symptoms. This can be followed by rotation of foods in question to minimize symptoms and decrease and prevent complications of allergy responses and related immune dysfunction. Many times the introduction of probiotic therapy and gastrointestinal repair supplementation can greatly reduce and in some cases eliminate reactivity symptoms. This is not true of celiac disease and foods that can cause anaphylaxis, but less serious food sensitivities can be seemingly eliminated.

It is estimated that 60-80% of our immune system cells exist in the gut lining. By following the recommendations above, we help modulate our immune function and decrease overall inflammatory states throughout the body. We are truly a product of what we eat and how we absorb and tolerate our daily nourishment. Foods can cause disease and can also be the greatest healer.

We can confidently say that over the years our patients who consistently get the greatest results are those that are partners in their healthcare by following our recommendations related to diet and through their daily actions and commitment, allow miracles of health and healing to unfold.  Time and time again we have seen chronic pain, headaches and migraines, which responded fairly well with chiropractic care, completely resolve with the addition of a specific diet based on their individual needs and discovered food sensitivities.

Testing and discovering food allergies and sensitivities can be simple, noninvasive and inexpensive when using applied kinesiology procedures and other bio-energetic testing. Many leave the very same day with a very specific dietary plan that begins to produce profound results in their health in a matter days. All it takes is the ability and willingness to participate and take your medicine called food. Who said medicine has to taste bad to be good? Optimum health is delicious and we can show you how. Bon appétit!
